Our Values
Our core values - Integrity, Customer-Focus, Excellence and Teamwork - make a statement about where we've been, who we are today, and how we will work together to achieve our mission. They have been drawn from our rich past, and distilled to connect us with the values most important today to our middle American customers. These core values provide the necessary foundation of basic principles to guide all CNO associates across the company.
Integrity - We have the highest standards for ethics, fairness, and personal responsibility. We’re honest and straightforward. We operate within the letter and spirit of the law. We show unwavering consistency between words and actions. We comply with all laws, regulations, and company policies.
Customer-Focus - We exist to improve the financial security of our customers and policyholders, and we put them first and foremost in all of our decisions and actions. We anticipate our customers needs and move quickly and urgently to serve them.
Excellence - We act with a strong sense of urgency, recognizing that speed matters. We honor our commitments and we take personal responsibility for our actions. To meet the needs of our customers, we strive for excellence in our products, services, and business processes. We are passionate about winning in the marketplace, and embrace any change needed to do so.
Teamwork - We win as a team, putting the enterprise ahead of any business unit, function, department, or individual interests. We value diverse teams that take ownership of work efforts, and create an atmosphere of commitment, participation, and collaboration. We trust that our team members act in the best interest of CNO, and we have confidence in their capabilities and intentions. Our associates grow personally and professionally through their experiences at CNO.
We commit to these ideals to build enduring value for our shareholders, associates, business partners, and customers.
Pay for Performance Culture
At CNO, we are committed to a pay for performance culture. Our compensation program is designed to reinforce our commitment to our mission and core values by embedding them in all that we do. Specifically, the following are goals of our program:
- Attract, retain and motivate top talent
- Align the interests of our associates with those of our shareholders through focusing on value creation
- Promote a pay-for-performance culture that rewards both overall Company performance and individual accountability
Professional Growth
Our organizational achievements to date have been accomplished through the dedication, intelligence, creativity and efforts of our Associates.
Our aim is to assist associates in achieving career goals, provide a best-fit match between associates' abilities and position requirements, and continually build competencies and skill sets through developmental experiences.
The best way to develop is through challenging growth experiences within day-to-day work, such as key projects, stretch assignments, people responsibilities, cross-functional teams and broader business/enterprise exposure. Job experiences provided by the organization can be the core investment in associate potential.
We encourage our associates to:
- Make their ongoing career development a priority.
- Identify ways to enhance their current performance to prepare for future responsibilities.
- Think beyond formal training and consider the critical experiences necessary for success.
- Explore career interests, aspirations, vision and goals and probable career paths
- Assess current strengths to leverage or enhance and determine areas for further development
- Consider resources/support necessary for continued development (mentors, coaches & other supporters)

Medical Coverage
The CNO Care Options Plan offers two options, which are both supported by the nationwide CIGNA Open Access Plus network. You have the flexibility to use providers both in- and out-of-network. Routine, in-network preventive care services are covered at 100% by the Plan, regardless of the medical option you choose.
Medical Options 1 and 2 – Both options are High Deductible Health Plans (HDHP) that can be paired with a Health Savings Account (HSA) to help you save pre-tax dollars for your current and future health care expenses. You may make contributions to your HSA, and CNO may also contribute to your HSA if you actively participate in the For Your Health! wellness program. Both medical plans have a deductible that must be met before the medical plan will begin to pay coinsurance for medical and pharmacy expenses. Medical Option 1 offers a lower monthly premium with a higher deductible and out-of-pocket maximum. Medical Option 2 has a higher monthly premium, but offers a lower deductible and out-of-pocket maximum.
Wellness
For Your Health!
CNO is committed to offering and supporting activities that promote healthy lifestyles for its associates. We offer our associates access to a comprehensive wellness program called For Your Health! The For Your Health! wellness program is supported by an independent, clinically-driven provider of integrated on-site health management, OurHealth. OurHealth staffs, supports and manages the integrated health and wellness program through onsite clinics, telephonic health coaching, and online wellness programs. Whether you’re trying to lose weight, gain control of a chronic condition, or increase physical activity, For Your Health! offers a new approach to wellness by providing you with a personalized and confidential action plan based upon your unique needs.
In addition to programs offered through OurHealth, the For Your Health! also offers resources such as a corporate walking programs, monthly educational presentations and various lifestyle management programs, as well as associate discounts for fitness memberships, weight management programs, and other wellness services.

Dental Coverage
You have three dental options, depending on your home/work Zip code: CIGNA’s Dental Maintenance Organization (DMO) plan, Delta Dental’s Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) plan and Delta Dental’s Preferred Passive PPO plan. All three plans provide benefits for preventive and restorative services.
Vision Coverage
CNO offers an optional, associate-paid vision benefit that provides an affordable way to maintain good health through proper vision care. VSP’s vision plan provides a nationwide eye-care network.
401(k) Plan
CNO's 401(k) plan is designed to encourage long-term savings for retirement. The plan allows you to build retirement income by deferring taxes on the money you contribute to the plan. New associates are eligible to participate on the first day of the month following one full month of employment. (Example: an associate hired on July 2 would be eligible to participate September 1.)
You may save from 1% to 30% of your salary in the plan in a combination of pretax and after-tax contributions, up to the IRS maximum allowable limits. The plan also offers loan and withdrawal features, subject to the plan and IRS guidelines. Each pay period, CNO will make a matching contribution of 50% of participant pretax contributions to the plan, up to 6% of pay – in cash. A five-year graduated vesting schedule applies to the CNO matching funds.
Tution Reimbursement
CNO appreciates the importance of continuing education and rewards such efforts. The Tuition Reimbursement program offers financial assistance to employees who take educational courses at an accredited college, university, business school or other educational or vocational institution. New full-time regular associates are eligible for Tuition Reimbursement after a 90-day waiting period. Please note that participation in this program is subject to departmental approval.
CNO provides a variety of on-site educational opportunities. They include computer software training, associate education programs, insurance education courses and management development programs.
Flexible Spending Accounts
Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs) allow you to put aside pretax money for eligible health care and dependent care expenses. Eligible expenses for reimbursement from the health care FSA include deductibles, co-insurance, eyeglasses and dental expenses. You can contribute up to $5,000 per year into a health care FSA with an annual minimum contribution of $120.
Eligible dependent care expenses include the cost of day care for children and the cost of care for an elderly parent when they are necessary, so that the associate and spouse can work.
Short-term Disability
Short-term disability (STD) benefits are designed to provide payments during an approved disability when the associate is under the care of a doctor and completely unable to do his/her job. STD payments begin after 7 days of continuous disability and can continue for up to 13 weeks (90 days). An STD Bank of days may be accumulated over time and can be used to provide a 100% benefit during an approved disability.
Long-Term Disability
Long-term disability (LTD) insurance provides supplemental income if you become disabled and cannot work due to a covered illness or injury. The company provides a benefit that pays 40% of your monthly salary up to $7,500. In addition, you can purchase a 20% buy-up option that adjusts the total LTD benefit to 60% of your salary, up to a monthly maximum of $15,000.
